Why Ghana?
Ghana is a country of significance for the African Diaspora. A story begins here. It is the gateway to Africa and a tropical country with important history - from being one of the landmark places birthing the Diaspora movement, to celebrating being the first country in Africa to become independent of colonial rule. There are countless activities to embark on when visiting Ghana - from spending a day lounging by the beach to a embarking on a historical visit to Cape Coast and Elmina to learn about the slave castles or going to the lush Boti Water Falls in the Eastern Region, Ghana will always be filled with bucket list adventures for any traveler.
Itinerary
-
Akwaaba! Welcome to Ghana! We will pick you up from the airport (Kotoka International Airport) and provide private transportation to our villa (about 45 min outside Accra).
The remainder of the day will be spent at leisure - relaxing by the pool, taking a walk to the beach - just a few steps away from your accommodation and meeting with other members on the retreat. Lunch will be provided (depending on your arrival).
In the evening, we will have a fireside chat to get to know one another and set intentions for this retreat. We will end the night enjoying a traditional welcome dance ceremony and have dinner.
-
We start off the day with a morning meditation, gratitude journaling and yoga on the beach. We’ll set individual and collective intentions for the retreat.
Breakfast and fresh juice will be served at the villa.
Relax and get ready at the villa for our day exploring Accra.
We will head out and spend the day in Accra with our English-speaking tour guide.
We will spend the day sightseeing popular landmarks in Accra. Accra, the capital of Ghana, has maintained its unique identity despite the fast paced development currently underway in this intriguing African city. Our tour includes a visit to:
The National Museum, one of the first works of independent Ghana – the idea inspiring the Museum is to relate Ghanaian art to the rest of the continent and to prove the existence of an African history as part of the general history of humanity.
We then head to the historic Independence Square. Ghana's Independence Square contains monuments to Ghana's independence struggle, this includes the Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument. Our experienced tour guides will give you a deep understanding and history of Ghana's fight and struggle for independence.
Our tour continues with the visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. We will proceed to downtown Accra, where you'll find Kwame Nkrumah's Memorial Park. Established in 1992, this park pays tribute to Ghana's inaugural President. It houses a mausoleum, serving as the eternal resting place of Ghana's first president and Africanist. Surrounding the mausoleum, a symbolic water feature represents life. Stroll through the serene gardens adorned with trees planted by leaders from around the world.
We return to the villa early in the evening for dinner.
-
We start off the day with a morning meditation, gratitude journaling and (optional) yoga. Breakfast and fresh juice will be served.
First half of the day - We will spend the day immersing ourselves in Ghanaian culture by first visiting Accra Art Center (Center for National Culture).
Here we will explore arts and crafts made by local artisans of Ghana, and from other West African countries. Textiles, wood crafts, instruments, jewelry, and traditional kente cloth are only a few of the amazing items we’ll discover at the center.
Lunch will be served.
Second half of the day - Importance of Rhythm and Movement in Ghana: Healing Generations through Dancing and Drumming + Homecoming Naming Ceremony
We then engage in a fun and interactive traditional Ghanaian drumming and dancing class to get the body moving. Traditionally in Ghana, the dancing and drumming tradition has always served an important role in Ghana’s history as a “vehicle for commune with the spiritual, a medium for release and expression, a force for social solidarity, and a tool for healing”.
We will then participate in a traditional naming ceremony. Discover a very important part of Ghanaian culture when you participate in a naming ceremony during your time in Accra. This private ceremony takes you through the whole naming process and sheds light on its history and origins. At the end of the ceremony, you receive a unique soul name that reflects your day of birth.
To end the day, we head back to the villa for dinner, and have an interactive cooking class with our private chef, on how to make traditional Ghanaian jollof rice!
-
We start off the day early with breakfast and fresh juice will be served, and start our drive to Elmina and Cape Coast. We will visit Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle.
We’ll visit the historical Cape Coast Castle. Built by the Swedes in 1653, but from 1657 to 1664 it changed hands many times, as it was conquered by the Danes, the Dutch, the Fanti (a local tribe), again the Swedes and finally the British. Today, it hosts a museum on slave trade history.
We then visit Elmina Castle, the oldest European building in Africa, erected by the Portuguese in the 15th century. At different times the castle has been used as a warehouse to trade gold, ivory and, eventually, slaves. The castle we visit today is the result of successive extension works and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A Door of Return ceremony will take place after the tour of both castles. This is a privately arranged ceremony to invite any Diasporans an opportunity to have a spiritual and emotional return to the land of their ancestors.
*Recommended, but not required, to wear white to the Castles*
We will then make our way about 10-15 minutes to Elmina for a walking tour and optional boat cruise of Elmina - viewing the Elmina Castle, fishing scene, sellers markets, sea and lagoon.
Relax by the beach and head back to the villa for dinner.
-
We start off the day with a morning meditation, and gratitude journaling. Breakfast and fresh juice will be served.
We then start an early departure to Waterfalls in the Western Region of Ghana where we will immerse in the beautiful flora and fauna that Ghana is popularly known for. You may also decide to participate in the optional 60 waterfall massage by our massage wellness partners.
We then head to explore the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm and learn how chocolate is made and how raw cocoa fruit tastes, before the fermentation process.
Our last stop of the day will be at Aburi Botanical Garden. The Aburi botanic garden is a popular destination for flora lovers and bird watchers. Visitors will find various endangered species of plants and can have an enjoyable picnic on any of the 10 beautiful well-manicured lawns. Selfie lovers will definitely fall in love with the picturesque background the garden offers.
We then head back to the villa for dinner.
